Great smart lock with a couple flaws
Note that there is a $30 coupon currently in effect, which brings the price down to $100.I recently moved and wanted to install a smart lock on the front door. I wasn’t sure how well this smart lock would work with the double doors on my new house, but it worked out great. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that this smart lock uses the TTLock mobile app, which I was already using for a smart lock in the garage. Installation was straightforward. The instructions are clear. The only extra step I had to take was to paint the bit of door that was exposed when I replaced the old lock with the new one. Thankfully, I had some leftover paint, so I didn’t have to deal with trying to match the color. Since I was already using the TTLock mobile app, I was able to transfer the registered fingerprints, which was a big bonus. I also love that there are multiple way to open/lock the door: fingerprint, key fob, passcode, key, mobile app. Moreover, I was able to reuse the keyfobs from my other smart lock on this one.There are only two complaints I have with this lock. First, it is battery operated, so you will have to replace them at some point. Since there is a manual key as well as a USB port for temporarily powering the lock with a power bank, it isn’t necessarily the end of the work if the batteries run out. However, my kids don’t have a key, and the likelihood of having a power bank and USB cable on me when the batteries run out is next to nil. The mobile app presumably displays the current battery level, but I think it’s just a guess as I don’t see how it can measure the remaining battery level for regular AA batteries. The other complaint I have about this lock is that since it is a deadbolt, you can end up damaging your door if you are not careful. What I mean is that the door locks automatically after a configurable time period. This is necessary if you want your children to be able to leave the house and lock it without carrying keys. With my other smart lock in the garage, it works great since it doesn’t work on the deadbolt. Even if it automatically locks with the door open, it’s no big deal, as the door will close and be locked. With a deadbolt, however, if it locks while the door is ajar, and you shut the door, the deadbolt will slam into the door and likely damage the door and the lock. I tweaked the time interval for when the door automatically locks (lengthened it), to minimize the number of times this happens, but I think it is unavoidable. I wish the lock were smart enough to only lock when the door is closed.
