Exactly as was outlined in the description
I already had one Echo 5 and liked it. This is the next generation and not much different than the the one I have but it’s nice. I’ve had the other one for couple of years and it’s still going strong. The only problem is that Alexa will not understand what I perceive to be simple instructions. For instance, cancel such and such alarm. Alexa well sometimes tell me I don’t have an alarm set for that time when in fact I do . Or, does not give me enough time to finish my sentence when giving a directive and I am speak loudly clearly and fast. Even when I slow down it doesn’t seem to get it. Interestingly that’s not all the time that’s just sometimes. I don’t use it a lot but I’m happy with it. I especially like that you can change the voice on the Alexa.

    Grandkids are enjoying
Great for listening to bedtime stories, setting alarms, asking trivia, dropping in to ask kids to come down to dinner. The kids can call me if I’m out on the property or next door. Lots of fun uses.

Using it for security and kid
While I was researching Alexa’s security system I noticed that this device was exactly the same (with a slightly bigger speaker) as the regular Amazon show 5 except it had features for kids and came with a free subscription to Amazon kids + for a year… having a 2 and a half year old I thought that I’d get this device for my daughter to enjoy. Now, the only problems I found with this system was that it’s extremely complicated to set up with other cameras. I worked as an Apple tech support advisor for nearly 5 years and would consider myself very tech savvy. I already had a Roku camera, a blink doorbell camera and a geeni cam that I use next to my daughter’s crib when she’s napping and/or sleeping… so I thought it would be easy enough to connect all of these devices to this and have one connected security system. But it took me over a month to get all 3 devices working together and then we changed our internet provider which threw the entire system out of wack. I still can’t figure out how to get my blink doorbell to show me a live view of my front door… I had to sign up for a blink monthly subscription and a Roku monthly subscription in order to get to use all of the features but it’s still not working as smoothly as I’d like it to. I realize that the continuity that Apple provides is better than any other services out there but it is extremely expensive and I liked the price point on this system. After a few months I can say that I do plan on getting myself set up on apples HomeKit in the future because I absolutely love the ease of using my iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple TV, AirPods, my wife’s beats ear buds and our AirTags… the continuity is second to none and after trying out this complicated Alexa set up it’s clear to me that I’m best sticking with Apple. I would recommend this to friends who are more familiar with Alexa’s system but I would not recommend that my mom or someone who is not tech savvy use this… if I could get it set up and working the way that I know it can then I’d be happy but the complicated system is just too much to learn.Update: 3/8/2024Ok, so I realized that the issues I was having had more to do with the blink doorbell camera… I ordered the sync module for that and that should resolve those issues. In the meantime I was able to get my outside Roku camera, the camera that I use to monitor my daughter and 2 smart plugs to work with the Alexa system. Also, my daughter has begun to show an interest in the kids + service which I think is great. So I definitely should at least increase this rating to 4 stars.

[developer here] Terrible experience. Terrible product.
I’ve been using this device about a year now. This has to be, one of the worst technological purchases I’ve ever made. For starters, I bought this literally just to rotate pictures on my desk. I had no intention of actually using any smart features. Since literally day one, it always shows a black screen when it’s supposed to be a Photo from my Amazon Photos library. I tried setting it up on-device, and as well as in-app on iphone. I contacted support, we restored it several times, and Amazon even sent me a new one (even though it’s a software issue which a replacement would not fix the issue). I grew tired of seeing nothing but a black screen and the time/weather, so decided to use it for more ‘smart’ features, like showing me local news, gaming news, weather news, etc. 75% of the time, when you see a story, and say “alexa, whats the story”, it will literally give a textbook definition of “what a story is” instead of the actual piece it’s advertising. Some days as of the last 4 months, it ACTUALLY shows my pictures on the wallpaper cycle, most other days, it doesn’t. I think there’s inherently terrible about this ‘kids’ version. I simply bought it because it matches my space aesthetic for my room. It defaults to a ‘kids’ programming, and I think this is where the software branch falls off and has so many issues. One would think it would run just like an ‘adult one’ but there’s something clearly imbedded in this for ‘kids’ because during setup it forces you to use ‘kid mode’ until you change that option later. There’s been no rhyme or reason it never displays my Amazon Photos. I turn it off every night, and on every morning, and only about 2/30 days a month it actually works as advertised. The ONLY reason I’ve not completely returned this, is because it was $40 on black Friday 2023 and that’s only 1 hours worth of my time; and I would almost lose money packing it back up and driving to UPS to return.I’ve literally considered buying the ‘adult’ version and just swapping the back plate with the galaxy print just to see if the experience is better.Unless you have a kid that will never use it for a single thing other than playing Baby Shark or making fart sounds, this is the worst product you can buy for a smart home device.
