You can’t have a perfect society without perfect people, and the only perfect people are the ones you can manufacture. The governing body of Olympus, an urban utopia created from the ashes of World War III, is about to bring paradise crashing down around their ears as they seek to regulate the minds and bodies of the human race . . . or fully replace them with cyborg substitutes. Deunan and Briareos, still new to the city, find themselves in the unlikely position of having to hold together this house of cards. Their strategy? Destroy the old foundation and pray everything stands while new underpinnings are forged!

From the imagination of Ghost in the Shell creator Shirow Masamune comes the manga masterpiece Appleseed, an epic cyberpunk vision deftly balancing hardcore techno-science, wry political commentary, and explosive action. A visionary work that inspired the wildly popular animated film, Appleseed is now presented for the first time in America in right-to-left reading format, as originally published in Japan.

    To Live or Die…
Seems someone was trying to manipulate computer, Gaia, into making drastic decisions that could jeopardize the entire human race along with the bioroids. Good thing Briareos and Deunan were there to save the day. Even though Athena had her reservations about the duo extracted from the badlands.

    The Classic II
CLassic cyberpunk sci first manga that still holds well after so many years! Deanna is a human warrior soldier who is a hottie female. Briareos is her cybernetic boyfriend who has a robotic face. Together they make a fantastic combat team! They also stop Gaia the computer system from destroying the Olympus paradise!

Can it get any more confusing?
Deunan Knute and Briareos find themselves in a war between the many political factions of Olympus. The artwork, like the plot, can become very confusing, as battle after battle is fought in the streets. Just how MANY sides are fighting each other is hard to tell, as we have humans, bioroids and even machines. Who will win the city becomes a side-issue, as all the factions end up just trying to survive and keep the city in one piece. And this is only volume number two!

    Great series for the collection.
Masamune Shirow has inspired some of the most groundbreaking anime ever, but his original works offer quite a contrast in their healthy dose of humor. The events in this volume were brought to life in the 2005 CG film, a stunning and dark character driven feature. Shirow’s art style is detailed and chaotically unhinged at the same time, I can’t help but enjoy it and think you would too.

In Volume 2: Prometheus Unbound, the last half of this second volume cranks the action up a notch, and luckily keeps the confusion the artwork in the first volume’s battles induces down to a minimum. As I mentioned in my review for Volume 1: The Promethean Challenge, the artwork can still get a little confusing, and the story can also be a little confusing at times, too. Luckily, though, the second volume’s confusion levels are much lower than the first volume, and it even feels more organized than the first volume, too. I noticed some things in this volume that obviously inspired elements in the sort-of adaptation Appleseed: The Movie (by ‘sort-of’, I mean it doesn’t really follow the story of the original manga–at least, not that I can remember) which I liked. The characters are still likeable, and facing challenges that question their own morals and the morals of others, along with conflicting morals and consequences. This was definitely a fun and thought-provoking read for me, and I look forward to re-reading volume 3: The Scales of Prometheus (which I had owned months before ordering the first two volumes) and reading the fourth and final volume.****1/2 out of *****
