I am a right handed person and broke my right wrist. I also happen to have a full time job and a grad student so not typing wasnt an option.I ordered the dragon software. I received it with same day delivery.Set up was very easy. This package comes with a headset and a disc.I ran it on a Windows OS.It works great with the Microsoft product such as word and it can work with the internet but I only got it to work with Firefox. Still very useful to have.I will probably keep using it even after my wrist is healed (yes I am using it now to write this). It makes typing very quick.Down falls: The mic has to be RIGHT at my mouth for it to get the words right.

SOUNDCARD ALERT!! Product does not work with Realtek sound card (COMMON on MOST computers! Though Nuance won’t tell you this)
Misadvertised. Should work straight out of the box. Microphone included (though VERY LOW QUALITY.) Spent 1 hr trying to make it work. Called Tech Support and was told that the Realtek sound card, which is a VERY common soundcard installed on many computers, DOES NOT work with Dragon Naturally Speaking. To make it work, I have to BUY a USB adaptor with two prongs and MAYBE then it would work.I have used Dragon for 1 years now and the company has ALWAYS had a problem with microphones for the other two versions I have used in the past. It is UNACCEPTABLE that a company could charge so much money and fail to FIX a BASIC problem – getting their programs to work with existing soundcards. I have a NEW Lenovo, a great computer, and it is totally Nuance’s fault for failing to respond to this tech problem. AND IT IS FALSE ADVERTISING when they FAIL to clearly mention this in the product description. The tech rep COULD NOT give me any specs over the phone as to WHICH type of USB port I would need to buy. So I have to DRIVE to the store (1.5 hr round trip for me) to buy what I need. He could ship it to me but that would take another 3-5 business days, which I can’t do, since I’m leaving town in 3 days.Of course, when they included the VERY BAD and UNCOMFORTABLE headset with microphone (prob worth $5) they should have included a USB adaptor just in case… But no, they leave it up to you to go buy one in the store. So this is DEJA VUE – I really honestly want to use this product, and it has worked well for me in the past, but the BARRIERS to use are so HIGH. I think their chief technology officer should be FIRED over this issue. I really haven’t been this pissed off in a LONG TIME!!!

Dragon Naturally Speaking 13
Dragon Naturally Speaking 13 for a PC is now outdated and replaced by Dragon professional 15. This program works well for general dictation. It takes practice to learn how to dictate and correct text. It does not work with outlook Hotmail and other application programs as I thought it would. You get 90 days free technical support. I did not find that the tutorials weâre very informative you are able to create specific phrases or spellings. Names with colors like white and red and green are not normally capitalized. But you can correct things like this by combining first and last names or changing the pronunciation of a word. For example: The name Vogt comes out vote unless I combine the first and last name or change the pronunciation of Vogt to some other pronunciation. I find the cut and paste works well and the program learns your style the more you use it. You can use the keyboard to edit misspellings.

They customer service is lacking for a very good product.
The product works well but getting Nuance to authorize the student account was VERY difficult. I do not have a student email as I am using a student portal through the University and emails and communication are within the portal. I had 6+ emails to them with a canned response each time about what I needed to submit. it wasn’t until I was ready to return the product a “person” actually emailed me with exact instructions of what they would except. They customer service is lacking for a very good product.

With apologies to singer Robyn, I’d rather be typing on my own.
I wanted to like Dragon. Maybe I would need a devastating injury to compromise my ability to type in order to appreciate it. In the meantime, I just wanted to make my transcription easier. I had a digital recorder in hand, no external mic, and I figured I could parrot the recording – especially since the dialogue had a lot of crosstalk. The truth is, given the difficulties installing the Dragon software and the clunky issuing of commands, I just gave up. In fairness, Dragon might work for you if you actually have the time and patience to “train” the software to your voice. But if you’re in a rush, Dragon is just too cumbersome to work with. I made it through the tutorial. And even with a relatively solid-spec laptop running few apps, my machine just chugged along, trying to catch up with my mouth. In the time that it took to voice a few sentences, well, I could have just typed them faster. Sorry, not sorry.

Fast set-up, accurate, and intuitively designed.
E-mail (.edu) verification was nearly instantaneous. Full version software, excellent out-of-the-box recognition and comes with everything you need to set it up. Included headset is 3.5mm jack design, not USB, with a separate jack for both the earphones and the boom mic. It also includes a 2-to-1 cable if your computer only has a single jack. Sure, it does have some “learning” exercises, but even without doing them, it’s very accurate.PAY ATTENTION to the recommended system requirements! It’s no joke. This software has a lot of work to do to understand you, control your running applications and type, all at the same time. If your set-up is marginal, you may want to look at an older version, or upgrade your hardware. I just meet the requirements with my aging laptop (AMD Athlon X2 64 – 2Ghz, 4GB Ram, Win7 64bit) and do notice performance impact. As for all the bad reviews out there…DO NOT BUY THIS IF IT IS THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PAPER IS DUE AND YOU’RE TRYING TO “BUY TIME.” That’s not what this is for. If you have the small amount of time to set it up and then get familiar with it, it WILL save you a lot of typing time in the long run.

Dictation software has come a LONG way over the years. DNS13 gets you up and running with minimal effort and training. The Student/Teacher software provides a low-cost entry into the world of speech recognition. All you need is a university/college email address and you ‘qualify’ for purchase as a student/teacher.

NOTE if you don’t have a CD-reader for your laptop, you’re stuck. The product is listed as sold by Nuance Communications Inc but when i tried contacting them for a downloadable version, they replied: “We apologize that we can not honor the document/file as a valid receipt or Proof of Purchase. Compu-Silv Computer Sales, a reseller from Amazon is not an authorized seller of Nuance products. You may contact them for assistance…”. So i contacted Compu-Silv and they said they also could not provide a download URL and could not be blamed that I do not have a CD reader. NOT helpful. Not very impressed with this program. It takes a long time to learn how to use it. I had surgery on my elbows and needed to do school work. If I had no choice but to use it, I would but I instead used one arm to type as it was easier.

I was unable to get a response from them about the copy that was lost in the Windows 10 crash even with the serial number et cetera. Had to purchase new copy to allow me to continue to work on two theology text. On the positive side the new edition I had recently purchased was almost 90% accurate a urge improvement over some of the earliest editions from the early 90’s.
