Everything you need to know to apply data contracts and build a truly data-driven organization that harnesses quality data to deliver tangible business value

Purchase of the print or Kindle book includes a free PDF eBook.

Key Features:

Understand data contracts and their power to resolving the problems in contemporary data platformsLearn how to design and implement a cutting-edge data platform powered by data contractsAccess practical guidance from the pioneer of data contracts to get expert insights on effective utilization

Book Description:

Despite the passage of time and the evolution of technology and architecture, the challenges we face in building data platforms persist. Our data often remains unreliable, lacks trust, and fails to deliver the promised value.

With Driving Data Quality with Data Contracts, you’ll discover the potential of data contracts to transform how you build your data platforms, finally overcoming these enduring problems. You’ll learn how establishing contracts as the interface allows you to explicitly assign responsibility and accountability of the data to those who know it best-the data generators-and give them the autonomy to generate and manage data as required. The book will show you how data contracts ensure that consumers get quality data with clearly defined expectations, enabling them to build on that data with confidence to deliver valuable analytics, performant ML models, and trusted data-driven products.

By the end of this book, you’ll have gained a comprehensive understanding of how data contracts can revolutionize your organization’s data culture and provide a competitive advantage by unlocking the real value within your data.

What You Will Learn:

Gain insights into the intricacies and shortcomings of today’s data architecturesUnderstand exactly how data contracts can solve prevalent data challengesDrive a fundamental transformation of your data culture by implementing data contractsDiscover what goes into a data contract and why it’s importantDesign a modern data architecture that leverages the power of data contractsExplore sample implementations to get practical knowledge of using data contractsEmbrace best practices for the successful deployment of data contracts

Who this book is for:

If you’re a data engineer, data leader, architect, or practitioner thinking about your data architecture and looking to design one that enables your organization to get the most value from your data, this book is for you. Additionally, staff engineers, product managers, and software engineering leaders and executives will also find valuable insights.

Addressing reliability and trust at the source
The author provides a compelling value proposition for adopting data contracts in an organization. The book clearly defines a data contract, introduces the concept of a contract-driven architecture, and supports its assertions with references and links to further readings. Additionally, it provides implementation examples in Python and YAML that can be used as starting points, as well as strategies for adopting data contracts enterprise-wide.The book is concise and well-organized. However, while reading it I sometimes felt like there was a bit too much “navigation” verbiage at the beginning and ends of many of the sections/subsections. (Subjectively, I think the book probably could have used a bit more editing because I think this choice in style sometimes disrupted the flow of the ideas more than it helped.) That said, I found myself recognizing those patterns and simply skipping over them as I progressed through the book.All-in-all, I felt that “Driving Data Quality with Data Contracts” provided an excellent introduction to data contracts. It was dense with thought-provoking considerations, as well as action items. It is clear that the author is an expert on the topic and I look forward to reading his next body of work!

    A truly comprehensive guide
Driving Data Quality with Data Contracts lives up to its ambitious subtitle as “A comprehensive guide to building reliable, trusted, and effective data platforms”.Metaplane CEO Kevin Hu notes, in his foreword: “Whether you’re a data practitioner who is tired of being blamed for data quality issues or a business stakeholder who wants to promote data trust , this book is the gold standard for learning about data contracts.”Author Andrew Jones, credited with coining the term “data contract”, addresses both technical and social/organizational aspects of data contracts and also includes a sample implementation. The book starts with a brief history of data platforms, explaining how the need for data contracts evolved, and continues to highlight how data contracts fit into other recent concepts such as data products and data mesh.

Pragmatic DQ – scaffolding towards Data Products (Mesh), adding to DQ Improvement course I teach
This is an important book on how to practically achieve Data Quality for Data Engineers and Architects. There are major tides and currents roiling the data world and Andrew’s pragmatic descriptions of cascading Data Contracts help connect the dots between Data Mesh’s Data Products, Data Observability, Data Governance, and Data Quality.Sometimes it is hard to see the forest for the burning DQ leaves – this book helps give you the perspective you need.
