The physical device is great but the software is ruining the party
For the small size of the device, the sound quality is exceptional. I have high-end A/V and home theater gear throughout my home and numerous portable BT speakers to compare their performance to, and for their intended use they punch above their weight class and could probably do even better if they weren’t limited by such poor software. Where they really shine is in stereo mode when paired with another one. I took advantage of the amazing deal that included the Hue bulb, which essentially made either item free depending on how you look at it.I have one on each nightstand and on several occasions, I found myself standing at the foot of the bed with a smile on my face listening to a track that was playing. The audio reproduction and soundstage is clear and expansive with a great 3D quality to it. Obviously, you can’t overcome the physics of driver size and enclosure design, but I am impressed at the volume level you can push these to without degrading the quality that much. Their stereo performance is very underated because I think most people buy them individually for Alexa functionality. Maybe they already know this, but if these could be unlocked from all the Alexa “smart” software restrictions and repositioned for their audio capabilities, Amazon would become a major player in BT speaker category. Add dedicated L/R speaker terminals on the back and things would really get interesting. In that scenario, I bet they would make a great surround sound setup for movies or multichannel music in smaller spaces, and maybe even an Atmos-like setup given the design of their driver arrays.

I think I got one with hearing deficits.
Excellent in all regards though my Amazon TV Cube can hear me from 2 rooms away while standing in front of this Echo 4th gen which doesn’t respond.
