From the Publisher

Data modeling is one the most crucial parts of Power BI which is usually undermined, misunderstood or completely ignored by many developers. The consequence is having unnecessarily large models, complex DAX code, and underperforming reports. In some cases, poorly designed data models incur surplus cost to organisations. The reports are so slow that the organizations decide to get more process power by buying Power BI Premium or upgrading their existing Premium license to higher and more expensive tiers, while all those costs could be potentially avoided by having better designed data models.

What makes Expert Data Modeling with Power BI different from other books on data modeling with Power BI?

The main focus of other books is to teach readers how to write DAX or resolve complex scenarios with DAX in the data model layer itself. With this book, I’ve focused on explaining the importance of data preparation as well as writing better DAX expressions. I want to help readers mitigate the risks associated with writing complex DAX expressions and take care of the heavy lifting in the data preparation layer within the Power Query Editor.

You’ll also discover many best practices in Power Query, data modeling and DAX that will be useful.

I’d also recommend this book if you’ve been looking for something that covers all the new features of Power BI, which are missing in other books such as object-level security, calculation groups, and composite models.

How has your background and experience helped you to write this book?

I come from a programming background with extensive experience in database design and implementation. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with relational data models – and Power BI is no different. Power BI also follows relational data modeling. To be able to design and implement a well-performing report, you also need to have a well-designed data model with the Star Schema approach. Having a concrete background in designing and implementing relational databases with Star Schema helped me significantly in writing this book.

What are your favorite parts in the book and why?

Data Preparation in Power Query Editor: I love this chapter as it explains the importance of data preparation while having Star Schema and data modeling in mind. It is super important to get the data preparation right which leads to having a well-designed data model that is clear, less complex and makes it easier to deal with the required DAX expression.Advanced Data Modeling Techniques: This chapter provides invaluable techniques for more advanced users working on enterprise-grade projects by explaining aggregations, incremental data loading, parent-child hierarchies, and more. Without knowledge of the techniques explained in this chapter, you won’t be able to support large models in an enterprise.Extra Features for Data Modeling: This chapter is great because it explains new features in Power BI which are either revolutionary, such as composite models, or are helpful in decreasing development effort and taking the user experience to the next level such as calculation groups.

Comprehensive and detailed book on Power BI data modelling
Data modelling for Power BI is a topic dear to my heart, so I was happy to see this new book published by a long-time Microsoft MVP, Soheil, who clearly knows his stuff. The book is very comprehensive and covers a tremendous amount of ground in nearly 600 professionally written pages. I was delighted to see chapters on advanced data modelling techniques, such as Aggregations, incremental refresh and RLS/OLS.Fundamental topics, such as modelling for time intelligence and the importance of using a star schema, also get covered. This book is an excellent addition to any library for someone serious about learning Power BI.

Excellent Power BI book for enhance user
This book provides excellent meaningful and understandable language for any Power BI user. It is a great book if have a background and are interested in learning how to do things in Power BI. The author does an incredible job of outlining the issues you need to take into consideration but there’s very little on the nuts and bolts of actually building Power BI apps. The book provides excellent in-depth knowledge of Power BI and different aspects of creating data model.

    Comprehensive and well structured
Most of us going through this book would already know that Power BI is a powerful business intelligence tool that can be used for data visualization and analysis. However, I feel that data modeling is an often overlooked skill that can serve as a strategic advantage when it comes to creating powerful dashboards and reports. Without a well-designed data model, the reports can become sluggish. This is where the book comes into the picture. According to me, the hallmark of a good technical book is being able to supplement it with good real-life examples, and this is something where this book excels. The book offers a mix of conceptual lessons and step-by-step examples. Helpful diagrams visualize table connections in sample datasets.I would recommend this book to slightly more advanced (or intermediate to advanced) readers and the length of the book may discourage some readers, but since the book is organized well, you can just pick the topic you might need! While it may require some dedication, the rewards of better data models and improved business insights make it a worthwhile investment for Power BI enthusiasts seeking to optimize their data modeling skills.
