Excellent resource even for those of us with 5 plus years of Power BI experience
Books, rather than videos, have long been my preference for learning.Of the several DAX books I possess, Extreme DAX and DAX Patterns are the two I reference most.Extreme DAX is exceptionally well written. This is crucial when the Authors detail the topic which confounds most of us who first learned DAX: row and filter context. They expand on this topic to include query context. Before delving into ‘context’, they detail Power BI best practices including model design, calculated columns, and measures using the CALCULATE() function.Over the past several months since purchasing this book, I’ve adopted many of their best practices recommendations. Doing so has increased my level of confidence when taking on new Power BI work assignments especially those which do not align, design-wise, with my prior experience.

    Challenging book
“Extreme DAX: Take your Power BI and Microsoft data analytics skills to the next level” by Michiel Rozema and Henk Vlootman is a valuable resource for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) in Power BI. The authors do an excellent job of breaking down complex concepts into digestible sections, making the powerful features of DAX accessible even to those new to Power BI. The book is well-structured, guiding readers through a variety of practical business scenarios that can be tackled with Microsoft BI tools, including Power BI, SQL Server, and Excel. One of the key strengths of this book is its hands-on approach, with numerous examples and exercises that encourage active learning. Rozema and Vlootman’s expertise shines through as they explore advanced solutions for real-world data challenges, without sacrificing clarity. Whether you are a business professional seeking to leverage data more effectively, or a data analyst looking to enhance your technical toolkit, “Extreme DAX” offers a comprehensive guide that promises to elevate your analytical capabilities to a new level.

Extreme DAX for SSAS, Power BI, & Power Pivot Usera
I loved the book covered everything I use on a daily basis as a Power BI Developer/ SSAS Tabular Model user. Extreme DAX gives the user a brief overview of all the places the Users can use DAX, and then it dives into some important DAX principles like columnar data storage, context transition, data modeling, and filter direction. I a brief overview of fact and dimension tables and relational database theory before delving into the DAX language. The author also taught the basics of DAX. I am enjoyed reading about the theory even though I watched over 100 videos of learning DAX like how to create calculated columns with row context and measures with filtered context, and DAX Queries utilization in tools like Power BI Report Server. I also like the sections on ALL & Keepfilter and Remove filter. The most important chapter was Table Functions & Iterators because most of the tables in DAX Queries in our models utilize both of them. The book also covered Row Level Security and other advanced DAX properties, however, most of my daily learning for my job consisted of the first half of the book. While the second half of the book, I only utilize the advanced elements 20% of the time in my daily work. I would add this book if you are learning DAX or using it daily on your job. I didn’t like the book didn’t offer a video to compliment this awesome material.

    Rozema, Michiel
At first, I thought, WTH? BUT, AS I continued to read. the book made less and less sense, then suddenly it all clicked together! I felt sorry for Dax as it appeared that he lived in an unstable home, and he started to hallucinated both night and day with seeing monsters. His school principal he thought was an Ogre!! With his missing dad he was frantic to find him and he went through some weird changes. I can’t say that I want to continued Dax’s story as I do not think that my heart can take it.

Great for New and Experienced Users
Extreme DAX would have been nice to have years ago when I was first learning DAX and Power BI. Itdoes a fine job of refreshing the user of best practices and designs in the early chapters before diving into advanced topics. I would highly recommend it to new and experienced Power BI Users. I can definitely say the topics in this book are relevant and are used in my current day-to-day work environment as a Power BI Analyst. Everything from designing the perfect data model, setting up dynamic RLS security, utilizing the proper filter context, and performing calculation based on time intelligence formulas. Though, I don’t necessarily agree it’s best practice to create a calendar table in Power BI, it can be good to know if you have no other option.By far, the business case section is the most valuable component to this book. The finance formulas and the convention in which they were utilized were very informative. I definitely learned a couple of new tricks from this section. All in all, Extreme DAX is easy to understand and a great book to reference.

Putting Power BI and DAX into perspective
Extreme DAX is the perspective of two well experienced and respected Power BI experts who have been consulting in the field for a long time. The book focuses on best practices for Power BI modeling and how the power of DAX can best be utilized. As such, the book is ideally for those who have some experience with Power BI and DAX.I like how the authors start out discussing where and how Power BI and DAX fits into modern business intelligence solutions. In my own experience in the field, I have in some cases used too much DAX and other cases not enough. This is where I found the first few chapters to be very useful in helping me understand how to strike a good balance while maintain best practices. Before touching on any DAX coding, Henk and Michiel tackle the topic of effective model design and some of the typical challenges that tend to come up in Power BI data modeling. I found it to be very refreshing that they decided to deal with such an important part of building effective reports in Power BI.

Extreme DAX, reveals the full potential of the DAX language’s features, and it’s an exhilarating journey. I’m looking forward to the second edition, which will certainly bring additional tools, such as 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, that promise to extend the Scope of DAX even further. This is an absolute essential resource for BI Developers && BI Analysts, enabling the use of advanced DAX techniques to perform in-depth data analysis.
