What’s new in this second edition?

I always tell myself that in everything I do, there’s room for improvement. No matter the task or project, a new way of thinking can improve your process, or perhaps help you acquire new skills or tools.

Writing a book about a platform that’s always evolving is reason enough to get back to it and enhance its contents. This edition includes new recipes to tackle even more scenarios covering desktop flows, mixed reality, geospatial services, and external access with Power Pages.

Which chapter did you enjoy writing the most?

I really enjoyed building the recipes for this book. I love the whole low-code concept of Power Apps, from the model-driven side to Power Apps Component Framework, and from creating integration solutions with the help of Power Automate to solving a real-life issue with the help of mixed reality.

If I have to choose, it would be between Extending the Platform and Tips, Tricks, and Troubleshooting—a developer’s life is way better with components and because finding workarounds to solve issues is a rewarding feeling.

Power Platform - 3Power Platform - 3

Who is the ideal reader of this book?

This book is best suited for someone who has started to work with Power Apps and is eager to take the platform to its limits. It will help you expand your problem-solving skills using the Power Platform. Getting to know all the components will serve you well in building powerful solutions.

What possibilities in Power Apps are you most excited to see develop in the future?

It’ll be interesting to see deeper integration between components of the Power Platform, but even more, improvements in the Power Fx language to help the application building process. Speaking of which, I’d love to see Power Fx everywhere in the platform.

I’m also looking forward to improvements in all of its code editors. Thankfully, these enhancements are a top priority for Microsoft.

A useful update to a good book.
Back in May 2021 I reviewed the first edition of this book (https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R2V758YIMW6T53/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1800569556). I gave it 4 stars at the time and have upgraded it this time around. As I focused on in my original review, this is a “cookbook” and the author has added some new and useful “recipes” and tweaked some of the old ones to update them for the evolved platform. The Power Platform as a whole and Power Apps in particular have evolved significantly in the intervening 18 or so months and this effort is a well done update that helps users deal with a platform that sometimes seems to change under your feet whether you are an experienced developer or a newer, less experienced “citizen developer”. Writing a book that carefully navigates the gray area in between these two target audiences is always a challenge. In this review, I will initially point you to the original review as a context because, on the whole, the book maintains consistency with the prior volume. Outlined here are the primary changes chapter by chapter:Chapter 1 expands a bit on the Expense Tracking list example.Chapter 2 around Model Driven Apps is completely restructured.Chapter 3 has no major changes.Chapter 4 has two new sections (“recipes”) on Desktop Flows and Combining Google Forms and Dataverse.Chapter 5 has two new sections, one on Map Capabilities (something I had to learn on my own the first time around) and one on integrating Mixed Reality which I plan on trying.Chapter 6 is basically the same.Chapter 7 has some minor restructuring.Chapter 8 has not changed.Chapter 9 has been restructured however it covers the same content.Chapter 10 has dropped a secion on handling image resources.Chapter 11 has a lot of new detail and goes much further than the original version.Chapter 12 is completely new and covers the recently released Power Pages update to Power Portal and I look forward to “cooking this new recipe” in its entirety over the next few weeks.

Easy to understand and follow along with the content!
I work as a Project Manager, most recently helping run projects building Microsoft Power Platform solutions. I wanted to gain a better understanding of Power Apps and the low-code environment it is built on. The Power Apps Cookbook was just wanted I needed. It gives real-world examples that are easy to follow along with. Even our developers were a bit surprised at how fast I went from very little knowledge to being able to speak and understand power app concepts. Highly recommend!

    In Depth and Updated Information
This is a great book for getting started or learning a new part of Power Apps. If you are looking to get started in Power Apps this book will help give you good direction and context on your journey. One thing that I particularly like is that there is updated information on creating Portals through the use of Power Pages. Another great thing about this book is it gives you a good framework in which to develop in Power Apps. I frequently get asked about what is considered “Best Practice” in Power Apps and this book concisely breaks it down in sections. One thing to mention is that Power Apps and Power Platform in general is a massive ever changing platform with frequent updates therefore there is always going to be information that is missed. However, as stated above this book covers the major parts to help you be a great developer or just learn more about Power Apps.Overall great book well written 5 stars!

One word can describe my feelings right now: Wow!
Wow! This book covers everything you need to start working with Microsoft Power Apps with real app examples, low-code walkthroughs, and great explanations. The book has exceptional details and graphics as you go through the steps in the book in your own environment. You’re going to learn how to make Canvas apps, Model-driven apps, add automation with Microsoft Power Automate, and learn how to extend the platform. This is my go-to Cookbook for Power Apps! In addition to the fundamentals, you will learn about improving the end-user experience, the admin center, adding artificial intelligence to your apps, and last but not least, tips, tricks, and general troubleshooting. I like how the book also covers components and Power Pages too. As a Microsoft certified solution architect expert, I’ve read a LOT of books on the Power Platform. I highly recommend you add this book to your personal library and skill up! Low-code no-code is the future for building business solutions by citizen developers.

Should have been more cognative of the low reviews.
I was hoping for more out of this book. All the 3-star and lower ratings are accurate. I found YouTube videos way more helpful. This had a couple things that were nice, but I’d rather have my money back. Would not recommend.
