Comprehensive book
This is a great book for intermediate/advanced users. It is not quite what I needed. I needed more of a “For Dummies” guide. It’s a great book just not for beginners.

Poorly designed Book – 1 star
It is a waste of money buying this book. Too many wordings, explaining with poorly illustration ( screen shots too small to see)Just like a textbook , hardly to learn by visualization.

Neither here nor there
Wishing to brush up on Power BI, the up-and-coming rival to the familiar Tableau, QlikView/Sense and the good old SSRS, I (a) signed up for Microsoftâs DA-100 certification exam, (b) reached to my bookshelf for a copy of âAnalyzing and Visualizing Data with Microsoft Power BIâ by Daniil Maslyuk – the official prep guide for the older Power BI certification exam, 70-778 – and then (c) surveyed Amazon for suitable books, avoiding, on one hand, thin, basic introductions and, on the other hand, advanced books about DAX or M.I ended up with three tomes:âApplied Microsoft Power BIâ by Lachev and Price, published in 2020 by PrologikaâMicrosoft Power BI Complete Referenceâ by Knight et al., 2018, PacktâPro Power BI Desktopâ by Aspin, 2017, Apress. (A new edition of this book came out in 2020, after my shopping exercise).I skimmed all four books, then started going through the DA-100 âskills measuredâ outline⦠and found myself reading Power BI docs on Microsoftâs web site, and watching YouTube videos about Power BI – typically from the official âMicrosoft Power BIâ and âGuy in a Cubeâ channels – while the books mostly gathered dust on my table. (I spent the longest with Maslyukâs, for its DAX coverage). A few weeks later, I passed DA-100, and revisited the four books to review them.In each case, there is limited enthusiasm, and advice to use free online learning resources. âMicrosoft Power BI Complete Referenceâ strikes me as closest to âApplied Microsoft Power BIâ, and not just because it, too, threatens to âbring your data to lifeâ in its subtitle. It (a) is unsuitable for beginners, (b) has rare flashes of original, value-added content, and (c) sequences its material in an odd way. (Well, in this case I can see the reason for (c): Packt have a thing where they slap their books together and produce a new, âlearning pathâ title). The book is a lot thinner than Lachevâs, but has more DAX and M, although not nearly as much as proper DAX/M books. If you are a Power BI beginner, look elsewhere. If you are a Power BI (service) power user / admin, take a look, but review âApplied Microsoft Power BIâ as well before spending money.

It OK, but there are equally good books (some of which are cheaper books) that don’t pretend to be a complete reference. For instance, they dont’t cover Power Query M-Code and state that it’s out of scope for the book.Really???? Then don’t call it a complete reference guide.
