No longer just a database engine, SQL Server 2019 is cutting edge with support for machine learning (ML), big data analytics, Linux, containers, Kubernetes, Java, and data virtualization to Azure. This is not a book on traditional database administration for SQL Server. It focuses on all that is new for one of the most successful modernized data platforms in the industry. It is a book for data professionals who already know the fundamentals of SQL Server and want to up their game by building their skills in some of the hottest new areas in technology.
SQL Server 2019 Revealed begins with a look at the project’s team goal to integrate the world of big data with SQL Server into a major product release. The book then dives into the details of key new capabilities in SQL Server 2019 using a “learn by example” approach for Intelligent Performance, security, mission-criticalavailability, and features for the modern developer. Also covered are enhancements to SQL Server 2019 for Linux and gain a comprehensive look at SQL Server using containers and Kubernetes clusters.
The book concludes by showing you how to virtualize your data access with Polybase to Oracle, MongoDB, Hadoop, and Azure, allowing you to reduce the need for expensive extract, transform, and load (ETL) applications. You will then learn how to take your knowledge of containers, Kubernetes, and Polybase to build a comprehensive solution called Big Data Clusters, which is a marquee feature of 2019. You will also learn how to gain access to Spark, SQL Server, and HDFS to build intelligence over your own data lake and deploy end-to-end machine learning applications.

Awesome book on SQL Server 2019
This book is incredible. I bought this book mainly to learn about containers and kubernetes and the chapters covering these topics were awesome. There was no unnecessary deviation, everything covered in those topics was useful and explained in simple easy to understand language. The author-Bob Ward is extremely talented in explaining complex topics in lay man terms. I highly recommend this book even if you are an experienced professional as it is a very good reference book.

Best!!!
I loved this book, it is great to learn from someone who has been involved with a product as great as sql server 2019, and if I get to feel that my brain was melting, the fact of being a let to process data without moving it from its origin is amazing.

Many URLs mentioned in the book are not valid
I haven’t finished reading the book yet, but one thing I noticed from the beginning was, the URL links mentioned in the book for additional info, are not working. This is really annoying and it also reduces the value of this book. Whoever wants to buy this book, please make a note about this.I also noticed some sample queries mentioned in the book can not be found in the Github repo. For example, ch2_intelligent_performance lwpSo I’m going to lower my rating just to 1 star.

Calling all Hybrid DBAs – A must read for every #SqlFamily professional
Picking up perfectly in stride from his previous book Pro SQL Server on Linux, Bob again hits another grand slam home run with regards to the correct level of detail and explanation with his new book SQL Server 2019 Revealed. The early chapters describe where the hybrid DBA will need to continue his/her skillset. New performance, security and availability constructs for 2019. All pillars that every data professional currently embraces. Once your reading and testing is complete with the new constructs, those core skill sets are officially modernized. The book then connects these pillars through a modern data platform conversation. Bob then dives deep into everything you need for containerizing-all-the-things. Big Data Clusters, Linux, Kubernetes, and Data Virtualization may be thin knowledge topics for now, but not for long. Keep reading. Bob keeps the conversion perfectly on target and builds on each previous topic. After reading this book and interacting with SQL 2019 within your lab environment of choice, you will absolutely be the go-to hybrid DBA or data professional your company will embrace.I have embraced SQL 2019 through preview development builds and now in production. You will learn multiple new SQL constructs with this book. Even if you are a seasoned SQL 2019 engineer, you will find this book the perfect reference to keep at your fingertips!Must read for every #SqlFamily professional. Cover to cover!

Approachable, Engaging, and a Must Have for Data Professionals
If you’re going to learn about SQL Server 2019, you want to learn from someone who knows it like the back of their hand. Bob has been involved in every release of Microsoft SQL Server in some way, shape, or form. The impact has grown with each release. His deep history with, and understanding of this platform – and it’s now a platform; not (just) a relational database – shows on every page.Bob has an amazing way of delivering extremely deep technical content in a manner that is not just approachable, but also interesting and engaging. It is the reason he’s in high demand as a technical presenter and why he’s been traveling the world to share this content; even as he was writing the book on the road. There is no need to read this book cover-to-cover if you’re interested in specific topics; Bob does a great job of mapping various ways to navigate. However, I found myself doing just that for the first time ever with a technical book.

A review for the book that needs no review…
Given how long Bob has been working with SQL Server, it goes without saying, that there is so much to learn from him in this book. Bob covers every aspect of new and updated features in SQL 2019 so this book is a must read for every SQL professional that wants to stay up to date on what is going on around this product (SQL on Linux, Containers, Kubernetes, Machine Learning, Performance… you name it!).What I like particularly about Bob’s books is his writing style: Everything is written in a way that is easy to follow and understand without over-simplifying.The fact that he dedicated this book to #sqlfamily and gave various members credit in the book is the icing on the cake â THANK YOU Bob, for everything you do for this community and for being who you are!

Learn about SQL Server 2019 from the Master
I highly recommend this book for a thorough knowledge of SQL Server 2019. I found Chapter 7 SQL Server 2019 Revealed inside SQL Server Containers especially helpful. This is really helping me to get my head wrapped around this subject. This chapter not only explains what is new about containers in SQL Server 2019 but explains containers in easy to understand detail. This is typical Bob Ward style. The book is in easy to read print also a nice plus.

Many, many online references
The book provides a high level view of the many features of SQL Server 2019 and it’s written by someone who appears to have a decent command of the English language. Compared with tech certification guides I’ve been reading lately this book is a very easy read. The number of pages is irrelevant because the book uses 5th grade spacing. The meat of information the book suggests is thought to be contained online accessible via links used throughout (Microsoft and Wikipedia largely). Seeing one reviewer mentioned that many of these links now seem defunct it may prove more economical to simply browse the intenet and save the cost of the book for other purposes. If the cost does seem just then it may be more advisable to acquire some type of digital media.. this would save a lot of translation effort.
