What parts of the book are your favorites, and why?
Definitely the practical examples. They really help to see how everything fits together in real life, not just theoretically.
It’s pretty cool when those examples stimulate creative thinking and give you a sense that you’re not just learning but actually doing—applying your knowledge, tackling real-world problems, using data in creative ways, and managing challenges with the expertise of someone who’s been at it for years. This book will show you how to use M code in real-life situations, inspire innovative thinking and problem-solving, and encourage you to develop your own solutions, enabling you to transcend the limitations of the user interface.

In what ways have you been active in the Power Query/M community?
It’s really exciting to see how much more popular Power Query has become recently. Not long ago, only a few people were using it, and there wasn’t much information out there. But now, we’re seeing a lot more users and a lot more discussion about it. As authors, we’ve been working hard to spread the word about Power Query. We write articles, make YouTube videos, and join conversations on places like the Fabric Community forums.
However, we noticed there was still something missing in the documentation for the M language. The official guides from Microsoft are great for basics like syntax and offer some examples, but they often don’t go into the nitty-gritty details. To fill this gap, I launched a new website in 2023, called powerquery.how, which dives deeper and has detailed discussions on the different parts of the M language. This book is the natural evolution of that process and includes lots of practical examples to help you understand all the concepts better.
What sets this book apart from other books on Power Query?
There are a number of fine books on Power Query. However, what sets The Definitive Guide to Power Query (M) apart is its focus on the M language. Most Power Query books focus on what can be done in the Power Query Editor user interface with maybe one or two chapters that go in-depth with the M language.
The Definitive Guide to Power Query (M) flips that structure on its head. Here, there’s only one chapter that focuses on the user interface of the Power Query Editor, while every other chapter focuses on the M language itself. This focus allows us to cover the M language and what can be done with the M language in a much more comprehensive way compared to any other resource out there.

Great resource for those who want to focus on M, not Dax
I have several Power BI books but most focus more on Power Pivot and Dax than Power Query. This book is enormous and it’s all PQ. I’ve got the thing bookmarked from front to back. Great reference for problem-solving and detailed PQ knowledge.

A great foundational reference for Power Query (M)
I have been working with Power BI for 8 years and have been about as deeply immersed in Power Query as one can be for most of that time. I’m only 400 pages in but have already learned several techniques and concepts I didn’t know I was missing. This has served to tie together other key concepts and strengthen my skills. While I agree with an earlier reviewer who wrote “This book is geared more for someone familiar with Power Query”, somebody new to Power Query who recognizes the importance of learning to use this powerful data transformation tool will find this to be a vital resource. This book stands out among so many technical books in that it functions equally well as one you can read through from front to back while working through the examples and as one you can go to when researching a solution to a specific challenge.

Great Resource for M for Power Query Users of All Levels
The book begins with a brief history on the M Language then moves into the Power Query Editor. It provides you with step-by-step instructions to guide you through examples with practice files. It highlights topics such as Nested Structures, Working with Dates and Times; Splitting, Replacing, and Combing Text, Debugging, Query Optimization, and Extensions to name a few areas. While Iâve used Power Query and M for several years, I recommend this book as there is always more to learn and it can serve as a great reference for both beginners and experienced Power Query users.

Cracking the code on Power Query
Was recommended this book since I work in Power BI and Power Query (M) daily and it has been fantastic. I often have used tables such as a calendar table and admittedly had copied and pasted into the advanced editor what others had built. Now this book makes me feel like I’ve cracked the code into understanding exactly what is going on and making custom changes I wouldn’t otherwise be able to do in the UI experience of transforming data. It’s well worth it to take your time with this book and understand the M power query language more in-depth. The authors did a great job of breaking it down.
