    Extraordinary perspectives
I work with leaders, primarily in the corporate world, and I’ve been looking for a way to help them shift from power over to power with. Cindy Suarez‘s book is a book I’ve been looking for for years to support these efforts for the collective good. The Power Manual is so comprehensive and practical. I especially love how she connects power with emotion, in understanding the offloading of anxiety. I’ve been digging into the book just a few days and I’ve already filled it with so many insights and ahas in the margins. I trust I will be referring back to this book regularly as I integrate thr teachings.

Must read: Tools to manifest a world we can all thrive in!
Cyndi writes a book that is a must read for anyone seeking to make the world a place of true freedom – where everyone can be who they want to be and has what they need to thrive. Her contribution is taking a lot of complex black liberation teaching and behavioral economics theory and distilling it to easy to understand ideas that are accessible and actionable so we can collectively dismantle systems of oppression and co-create a world that works for all of us.

    A Gift to Humanity
I love this book. I’m a psychotherapist, and I’m convinced if we all internalized and practiced these concepts my profession would not need to exist. There is so much here, and it pulls together such complex ideas from so many cultures, fields of study, and human experience, and yet it is deliciously concise and focused – and aptly named. It is an action manual, a way forward. She is orienting us to awareness/spirituality, play, attachment, destruction and reconstruction – the way to understand and make meaning out of the trauma of all the oppression we have committed and experienced. Furthermore, she writes in a style that encapsulates the concepts: simple yet complex, assertive, wise, and most importantly, accessible. It is brilliant. My only complaint is that I would love to see more one-on-one games, since many (most?) of our experiences with power dynamics happen in dyads in our daily lives.

Liberating for all who do any form of social justice work
Older, white, male, overeducated, working with wealthy people and their advisors on their philanthropy, I read Suarez with admiration and respect for her synthesis of so many far ranging traditions, including feminism, desconstruction, and theories of play and drama. I felt challenged but also included as a fellow human in the quest for equality and mutual respect. The master and submissive or slave define each other, as Hegel noted. Entire states, companies, and economies are built from these hierarchies of mastery and subordination. Suarez helps us all liberate ourselves from Hegel’s Master/slave dynamic. We get to wait for Godot like Vladimir and Estragon, rather than like Pozzo and unfortunate Lucky. Sad it would be if we turn things upside down and nothing change other than who hold the whip hand and who carries bags of sand in a circle.

Essential reading for anyone who wishes to be their best selves!
This book is a masterful dissection of how power is shaped and structured in modern Western society to dominate and suppress peoples’ natural drive towards freedom. Suarez helps us see how people are made to believe themselves powerless, and thus how we become unwitting servants to domination by the elite. She offers us exercises and reflections that can help us reorient ourselves to how power flows, and even offers games that we can play that help us “see” power more clearly. Highly recommend!

This book puts the issue of power to the fore – and does so through a range of prisms, which makes it an interesting read and provokes fresh thought about how we experience that power and how we might work with/through it.The author’s particular take on the question is outlined – and the book offers a number of practical games that allow people – whether they be in their community or work settings – to actively experience power and reflect on their place in it.
